Fort St Jean Baptiste

Natchitoches is a town settled by the French who wanted to assert their ownership of the entire Mississippi River watershed after La Salle boated down it from Canada in 1682. The French culture is strongly in evidence here and most things, like streets for example, have French names.

The plaque says, Built about 1715 on the request of Saint Denis to halt the Spanish expansion eastward. The Natchitoches Indians, allies of the French, gave their name to the city.
